Our garden design process: expert garden design services in Edinburgh

If you’re looking for expert garden design services in Edinburgh, it’s worth remembering this - getting a garden designed and built is a big decision and often a once-in-a-lifetime spend. It’s probably not something you really want to revisit on a grand scale in the same garden. It therefore often pays to consult a designer.

Designing a garden should be a partnership between you as the client and your designer - your investment really needs to result in something that not only looks amazing and you love, but something that is practical and functional too.

When we work together on your dream Edinburgh garden, I’ll lead you through my tried-and-test design process:

1. Initial consultation

We’ll meet with you to chat about what you need from your garden, any ideas you already have, what you love, what you don’t love and your budget. This covers all the important stuff that will inform a design you’ll love.

2. Site survey

We visit your garden and measure the space, assess level changes, check your soil, light, aspect and check out any existing plants and garden structures.

3. Design concept

We produce initial concept designs providing you with options of how the garden could be laid out. Accompanying mood boards help you really visualise your new garden.

4. Masterplan

Once you’re happy with the layout of your new space, we’ll get started on the Masterplan which details your design, including materials. 3D visualisations are produced at this stage to really bring your new garden to life

5. Working Plan

A working plan details the dimensions of the design, level changes, heights and any design specifications needed to support the build of the garden. The working plan also provides everything you need to get estimates and quotes for the build.

6. Planting plan

Planting plans provide you with locations of the recommended plants and a schedule including plant names, sizes and the quantities needed. A moodboard is also provided, giving you an idea of the planting look and feel and how this will bring your garden to life.

We can source trees and plants from established and respected growers and it is recommended that we set plants out when the garden is ready for planting. We welcome keeping in touch as the space matures and are available for aftercare and maintenance advice.

7. Build quotes

The design package for your garden is put together and can be sent to landscapers to quote. We work with trusted landscapers who can build and create your garden, or you can use your own contractor.

8. The build

Go, go, go! You’re ready to build! We can work with the contractors on the build stage of your garden and support the planting stage with setting out your planting in line with the planting plan.

You are then ready to start enjoying your gorgeous new garden!
